Dr. William Mathers, a former consultant for Bio Logic Aqua Research, answered a few questions about Nature’s Tears EyeMist.

How does Nature’s Tears EyeMist differ from eye drops? Nature’s Tears EyeMist utilizes an entirely different approach than eye drops to correct the tear film in a person with dry, irritated eyes. By misting the tear film surface with sub-micro-liter droplets of very pure water, the thickness and concentration of the aqueous layer can be restored to normal without losing the lipid layer or beneficial proteins. Nature’s Tears EyeMist is the first optical application to utilize a water mist rather than chemical eye drops.

What is the role of the tear film in dry, irritated eyes? The human tear film, covering the cornea’s external surface, has three layers. The mucin layer, the aqeous layer, and the lipid layer. The discomfort and blurring of dry eyes begins with the evaporation of pure water from the aqueous layer. This thins the layer and increases the concentration of dissolved electrolytes and beneficial proteins. These dissolved substances keep the eyes comfortable and safe from infection but when they become unnaturally concentrated, burning and stinging result.

When should Nature’s Tears EyeMist be used? Nature’s Tears EyeMist is specifically indicated for patients who do not tolerate artificial tears well. In addition, the product benefits every disorder whose symptoms include dry, irritated eyes. Patients with eye irritation (dryness, burning, itching, fatigue, etc.), from dry eye, contact lenses, post-Lasik surgery, computer eye strain, lupus, scleroderma, harsh indoor and outdoor conditions, airline travel, sports activities, smoke, dust, air pollution and low humidity will all benefit. The mist is effective in all climates and for all ages all over the world. Best results are obtained if the mist is applied properly, which may require a small amount of instruction and practice. Nature’s Tears EyeMist is 100% safe and may be used as often as necessary, even by patients with severe dry eye. The product may be safely used with any other eye application or medication.

How do I apply Nature’s Tears EyeMist? Hold dispenser about 8 to 12 inches from eyes and press the nozzle, misting for 1 to 2 seconds in a sweep across both eyes while keeping eyes open. Do not aim directly at eyes. To avoid reflex blinking, begin by pointing the mist at the side of your eyes. The mist application supplies not only sufficient moisture to replenish the tear film in both eyes, but it also moisturizes the eyelids and the facial skin around the eyes.

Dr. Barber practices in all areas of ophthalmology but does research on corneal inflammation, which can be caused by dry eye. There is no skin over the cornea and it is protected only by the corneal membrane and the tear film so it’s very delicate. If the tear film is healthy, the eye is likely to be healthy.

According to Dr. Barber, hydration and diet are critical to retain moisture in the eyes. You should also eat green, leafy veggies, fruit and omega-3’s.

In younger people, according to Dr. Barber, there are very few symptoms of dry eye. Dry eye is most common in people over 35. Dry eye symptoms include burning, itching, irritated, red eyes, and blurred vision.

The hormonal changes leading to menopause, she explained, start at around age 35, and while men have some of the same hormonal fluctuations as women, women have more hormones and more dry eye.

Ms. Kleyne asked what women can do to treat menopausal dry eye, and Dr. Barber said to do what you would for hot flashes; Exercise, drink lots of water, try to stay in a cool place and wear layered clothing so you can cool yourself off.

–

Sharon Kleyne is the founder of Bio Logic Aqua Research, the maker of Nature’s Tears EyeMist. Nature’s Tears EyeMist is an all-natural mist for dry eyes.

The importance of water in relieving dry eye symptoms and maintaining corneal health was discussed during two on-air interviews by Sharon Kleyne, founder of Bio Logic Aqua Research and host of the Sharon Kleyne Hour, with Harvard Corneal Researcher Dr. Ula Jurkunas, a clinician scientist heading corneal research and with Lasik pioneer Dr. Marguerite McDonald, a clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at NYU and refractive eye surgeon.

According to the aforementioned doctors, nearly everyone experiences dry eye and eye dehydration symptoms, including infants. Dry eye caused by dry air and diet accounts for 80% of eye doctor visits in the United States. Dry eye can lead to blindness.

Doctors Jurkunas and McDonald agreed with Mrs. Kleyne that loss of water in the tear film is the underlying cause of dry eye. According to Dr. Jurkunas, “It is important to keep the cornea clear and hydrated. When the tear film is too dry, the cornea becomes somewhat irritated and opaque.” According to Dr. McDonald, “When the tear film lacks sufficient water, small corneal ulcers can begin.” Chronic dry eye could cause loss of vision.

Dr. Jurkunas explains that chronic dry eye, eye infections, allergies, and other conditions, can lead to a permanent impairment in the production of corneal stem cells.

Dr. McDonald reported that dry eye disease is a health crisis in the United States that can lead to severe eye discomfort, loss of work productivity, stress, fatigue, allergies, impaired vision, and, ultimately, blindness.

Sharon Kleyne revealed research has discovered that dry eye and tear film dehydration can be caused by numerous environmental conditions, including dry air, polluted air, improper diet, sugar, lack of sleep, climate change, wind, insulated walls and windows, forced air heating and cooling - and most importantly, not drinking enough water.

Spring is upon us, and Summer is just around the corner. It is during this time of the year that seasonal allergies start to affect us. The typical allergic reaction produces symptoms in the eyes, breathing passages and skin. Some allergens only bother the eyes, causing them to become dry, red, and/or irritated.

So how do you protect your eyes against seasonal allergies, and how do you soothe them when they are irritated and red?

The eye’s first line of defense against allergies is the complex and extremely thin tear film that covers the optical surface. Many allergy eye symptoms result from dehydration of the tear film’s aqueous (water) layer, thereby creating an over-concentration of irritants and allergens. Standard remedies such as eye drops and redness relievers may be ineffective against allergy eye because they can wash away the natural tear film, including the evaporation-slowing lipid layer, and they are often manufactured with chemicals which can cause their own reactions.

The best way to soothe allergy eye and re-hydrate the tear film is by adding add pure, pH-balanced humidity to the air around the eyes. The humid mist will find its way into the tear film’s aqueous layer in just the right amount to help alleviate symptoms naturally and without harsh medicines, drops or chemical formulations.

Nature’s Tears EyeMist is an all-natural solution to allergy eye. The gently, 100% natural mist provided moisture to the tear film, providing instant relief. Because Nature’s Tears EyeMist contains no harmful propellants, preservatives or chemicals, it can be applied whenever discomfort is felt. Application several times a day can help prevent or lessen reactions to pollen and other allergens.

Eyesight threats can be found anywhere. From perspiring to being involved in emergency situations, the eyes are a lot more sensitive than most believe. Situations involving smoke, heat, dust, fumes, and airborne chemicals, as well as machine work, can put your eyes at high risk for injury and damage.

Unprotected exposure in the above situations and many others could result in consequences ranging from mild eye discomfort to serious and permanent eye damage. Symptoms could include blurred or impaired vision, pain, dry eye, eye strain, burning, itchy or watery eyes, eye diseases and serious physical injury. Symptoms may be mild, temporarily disorienting, or they could result in permanent eye damage and eyesight loss. Eyesight is so valuable that it pays to educate yourself about eye care and practice good eye health on a daily basis.

Even though it may seem impossible to protect yourself from every situation where your eyes may be damaged, there are many preventative measures you can take.

Before engaging in an activity where eye injuries could occur, be aware of high risk situations, have a predetermined emergency first aid plan for eye and other injuries, follow good safety precautions and procedures, and have emergency first aid materials available.

The best way to prevent eye injuries, especially from foreign objects and harmful substances, is to wear protective eye wear when in potentially dangerous situations. Another very important measure is to keep your eyes hydrated by drinking plenty of water and using an all natural eyemist. If eye discomfort should become extreme, in almost any circumstance, irrigate the affected eyes with a sterile eye wash spray such as Bio Med Wash or find the nearest eyewash station.

Dr. Latkany is a New York eye doctor who devotes his entire medical practice to dry eye disease.

Mrs. Kleyne asked Dr. Latkany why he decided to focus his practice on dry eye. Dr. Latkany replied that millions of people suffer from dry eye, and many people who do suffer from dry eye don’t even know that they do. According to Dr. Latkany, dry eye is also a common reason people see allergists and that many patients are surprised when told they have dry eye and it’s often misdiagnosed as an allergy or infection.

The symptoms of dry eye, according to Dr. Latkany, are intermittent blurred vision, itching and burning eyes, redness, irritation, drowsiness, anxiety and increased sensitivity to allergies. Dr. Latkany stated that over 100 prescription drugs can cause dry eye, including allergy, thyroid, blood pressure and anti-psychotic medications.

Dr. Latkany considers his mission to be to inform the public about dry eye’s rapid growth, symptoms, and the consequences of not taking preventive measures. Dr. Latkany emphasized that dry eye affects all age groups but is more common over age 40.

Dr. Latkany’s book, “The Dry Eye Remedy” can be found by going to www.dryeyeremedy.com, Amazon.com or any bookstore.

The goal is to provide a free examination and screening to every child at age three months and six months, and to provide parental education about eye diseases, natural eye health and dry eye prevention.

Vision and eyes can affect walking, hand-eye coordination and other developmental areas. Vision problems and dry eye could also be a factor in attention deficit disorder.

Computer and TV use, says Dr. Steele, should be minimal up to age three, then carefully monitored by parents. Children engaged in these activities tend to blink far less, which can lead to dry eye problems.

A parent can evaluate a child’s vision and eye health by observing how the child tracks objects and responds to visual stimulation. They should also look for dry eye symptoms such as redness, squinting, occasionally blurred vision, frequent headaches and fatigue, and make sure the child drinks sufficient water.

Other factors that can dehydrate the eyes’ tear film include arthritis, gout, eye surgery, poor nutrition, dehydration, low thyroid, lack of sleep, contact lenses, and topical eye medications. These factors don’t only cause dry eye, but along with bacteria, allergies, tumors, and environmental conditions, can also lead to a disease called “blepharitis”, which is inflammation of the eyelids.

Although dry eye and blepharitis symptoms are very similar, it is possible to tell the difference between the two. Both include sleepiness, difficulty reading, anxiety/depression, increased eye allergies, a sensation of dryness, redness, fluctuating vision, and tired eyes. Blepharitis symptoms alone also include burning and worsening towards the end of the day.

With no treatment, chronic dry eye and blepharitis will usually get worse over time. According to LASIK pioneer and ophthalmologist, Dr. Marguerite McDonald, 20 to 30 million people in the United States show symptoms of early stage dry eye disease.

Six million US women and three million men suffer from chronic dry eye. A drug called Restasis can help the eye’s lachrymal glands produce more and better natural tears. This is extremely helpful in treating dry eye symptoms. Nature’s Tears EyeMist, an all-natural eye mist product from Bio-Logic Aqua Research is also strongly recommended. Nature’s Tears EyeMist is the only eye care product that supplements lost tear film water without washing away the tear film’s lipid layer or other beneficial components.

Computer eye strain, a form of dry eye disease, has become one of the most common reasons for eye doctor visits.

Eye health advocate Sharon Kleyne cautions that computer eye strain symptoms should never be ignored. Mrs. Kleyne is host of the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water syndicated radio show, and founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Research.

Sharon Kleyne notes that the tear film of the eye is 99% water and that computer eye strain symptoms usually result from tear film water evaporation. Symptoms include tired, burning or itchy eyes, blurred vision, headaches, poor sleep and elevated stress. The good news, Mrs. Kleyne says, is that with a few common-sense precautions, including the following tips, computer eye strain can be relieved and even prevented.

Have an annual professional eye exam.

Drink at least eight glasses of water every day.

Eat eye healthy foods (dark green leafy vegetables and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids), exercise and fresh air regularly, and get sufficient sleep.

Keep a hand-held air humidifier, plants and/or an open container of water near your desk. Because the air is dry, adding water (moisture) to the air reduces dry eye and natural water evaporation due to dehydration.

Sip water while you work. Pour bottled water into a glass before drinking.

Try to blink more often, taping a reminder to the computer if necessary. When working at a computer screen, your eyes’ blink rate can drop from 30 times per minute to three times per minute, which increases tear film water evaporation.

Exercise your eye muscles by looking around the room at varying distances several times per hour (Take breaks away from your desk – outdoors if possible. Crack (or open) a window to let in fresh, humid air (indoor air can be dry, stale and dehydrating).

Turn off lights that are too bright, especially fluorescent lights. Or switch to a desk lamp.

Periodically throughout the day, moisturize the air around your eyes with a pH balanced (below 7.0), fine-mist eye spray.

The only all-natural, all-water, hand-held eye humidifying device with patented technology to supplement natural tear film water, is Nature’s Tears® EyeMist® from Bio-Logic Aqua Research, a sponsor of the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water.

Driving, whether it is long distance or your normal commute, can result in dehydration of the eyes, or dry eye. The confined space of the car, combined with the heating/air systems in the vehicle, sun/road glare, and environmental conditions can cause the tear film of the eye to lose moisture. When this happens, the eyes can feel dry, fatigued, and itchy.

Quick and simple tips for the everyday driver, to reduce fatigue and protect vision.

Smoking while driving is especially unhealthy because of the confined space. It addition to damaging lungs and heart, cigarette smoke is extremely irritating to eyes – even with a window opened.

Drink plenty of water while driving.

Wear sunglasses: they can help reduce road glare.

Eat foods with high water content, and easily digested foods.

Get as much sleep as you can. Try to keep as normal a sleep schedule as possible.

Keep Nature’s Tears EyeMist handy wherever you go. Mist when you get up in the morning, after naps, after showering or cleansing, whenever eyes or face feel tired or uncomfortable, and three or four times a day as you drive as a preventative.

Nature’s Tears EyeMist (@NaturesTears) is an all-natural mist for dry and irritated eyes that was developed by Bio Logic Aqua Research (@BioLogicAqua). It is gentle to use, and can be used as many times a day as needed. It can even be used while wearing contact lenses! Bio Logic Aqua Technologies Biomedical Research has developed a wealth of new information about caring for eyes and skin – the result of a decade of research into dry air and eye moisture.
